Women in Scipture

Gloria Ulterino will lead the Voices of Women program at St. Mary's downtown, noon - 1:00 p.m., October 27th entitled "Women in the Scriptures." The focus of the program is the story of Martha and Mary, as told by Luke (10:38-42). Gloria will begin by raising questions about this story, then looking at how Paul in his authentic letters speaks highly of women before proceeding to the Gospels, which come later. Perspective makes all the difference in returning to the story of Martha and Mary, with some thoughts from Scripture scholar Barbara Reid. We always need to remember that the words and actions of Jesus in the Gospels are filtered through the eyes of the evangelist, for a variety of reasons.

Women's Authority and Current Church Brokenness

I suppose Women's History Month is a good time to weigh in on current discussions and disagreements about women deacons and women priests in the Catholic Church. In some ways, it seems a fluffy conversation in light of recent revelations about our grievously wounded clerical system. But perhaps that is exactly why we need to have this discussion. The Fordham Center on Religion and Culture sponsored a forum on the future of women deacons. Panelists included Professor Phyllis Zagano, Fr. Bernard Potier, S.J., Sister Donna Ciangio, O.P. and Fr.
