In the Belly of the Whale
Voices of Women returns in this new year with a Zoom presentation on Sunday, January 24 at 12 pm. Our speaker, Ruth Marchetti, will focus her presentation on the story of Jonah and his response to God’s command to preach against Nineveh. Only after being swallowed by the whale and then being spewed onto dry land does Jonah become an obedient prophet.
Participants are encouraged to read the very short Book of Jonah and reflect on their own resistance to God’s invitations, especially ones which challenge our understanding of how God works in the world. How do we stay open to encountering God even in times of stress and confusion? What are the “signs of the times” that call us to deeper understandings of ourselves and our world? Can we embrace periods of solitude that break down our resistance to God?
Our speaker for this event is Ruth Marchetti, retired after working for 19 years doing justice and peace work with Catholic Charities agencies in the Rochester Diocese. Ruth is passionate about justice and an avid environmentalist. She is a founding member of RAICA, Rochester Area Interfaith Climate Action. Please join Ruth as she uncovers the lessons learned from Jonah. Please bring your experience, wisdom and open heart to this conversation.
Sign on begins at 11:30 so that participants may enjoy time to visit with others in a virtual coffee hour. Sign on with this:
